  4. 1756-OB32XT: XT wide-temperature high-reliability variant, functional replacement for OB32K

Nota: 1756-OB32 is NPN sinking, cannot directly replace PNP sourcing output modules (some OV models)

✅ Aplicaciones típicas

Automation production lines, maquinaria de embalaje, transportadores, climatización, tratamiento de agua, automotive welding lines, high-volume 24V DC discrete load control

✅ Troubleshooting Summary

  1. Output indicator off: Verify external 24V DC supply, DC-COM wiring and load polarity (NPN wiring: load positive to 24V+, load negative to module output point)
  2. Single channel no output: Force the point ON in program and measure voltage at terminal; if voltage follows command, fault is external open circuit; if no voltage change, channel is damaged
  3. Entire group no output: Check DC-COM supply and fuses for the corresponding group
  4. Outputs chattering on communication fault: Verify FaultMode setting in Studio5000 module properties

✅ Installation & Notas de mantenimiento

Power each group separately; do not drive full 32 points from one unlimited power source; calculate total current based on 0.35A per point

Connect freewheeling diodes in parallel with inductive loads (solenoid coils) to suppress back EMF and protect output transistors

Do not hot-swap terminals while powered; perform wiring work with power removed

Etiquetas: Jump directly to module tags

  1. Auto-generated tags and address mapping

1756-OB32 uses 1 DINT for 32 agujas:

OB32_Output.Data: DINT, bit0~bit31 correspond to Channel0~Channel31

Programming example: OB32_Output.Data.0, OB32_Output.Data.1 … OB32_Output.Data.31

Alias tags are recommended, p.ej. Alias_Solenoid_0 := OB32_Output.Data.0; for easier programming and drawing alignment

  1. Descargar, online verify and test
  2. Compile project (Ctrl+F7), fix errors before downloading to controller
  3. Online status: Green icon = normal; Yellow = warning; Red = fault
  4. Fallas comunes:

Keying Mismatch: Check Series/Revision against physical module

I/O Connection Fault: Caused by too small RPI, high backplane load, module power loss or loose terminals

  1. Force test: Right-click tag → Force On/Force Off to test each channel

👉 Remote EtherNet/IP Chassis (under 1756-AENTR)

Differences in workflow:

  1. Right-click I/O Configuration → New Module, add 1756-AENTR first and configure IP address
  2. Right-click under AENTR → New Module, add 1756-OB32; slot number is its position inside the remote chassis
  3. RPI ≥50ms for remote I/O; small RPI values cause frequent connection drops

✅ Recommended Parameter Summary

Electronic Keying: Exact Match

RPI local chassis: 20EM; remote EtherNet/IP: 50EM

Program Mode: Apagado

Fault Mode: Apagado

Freewheeling diodes required externally for inductive loads (válvulas solenoides)

⚠️ Recordatorio importante

1756-OB32 has no individual short-circuit protection. A single short circuit will not trigger a separate channel fault; it may pull down the whole group or burn out channels. Only module-level communication faults are reported; no independent per-channel diagnostic codes.

regla de cableado: NPN se hunde, load positive to 24V+, load negative to module output point, COM to 24V-.

  1. Module Communication Fault (Red icon in Studio5000, I/O Connection Fault)

Síntomas

Module fault, Fault tag bits set, outputs cannot be controlled, module OK light off or flashing red.

Causas

  1. Electronic keying mismatch: Serie / Revision in configuration inconsistent with physical module
  2. Wrong slot number, poor backplane contact, module not fully seated
  3. RPI too small, high backplane load, insufficient bandwidth on remote AENTR
  4. Chassis power supply undersized, unstable 5V backplane supply
  5. Hardware failure of module

Resolutions

  1. Read actual module revision online and update configuration; use Compatible Module temporarily for spare replacement, avoid Disable Keying for long-term use
  2. Apagar, remove and reinsert module, limpiar los dedos dorados del backplane; verify slot number
  3. Local RPI ≥20ms, remote EtherNet/IP RPI ≥50ms
  4. Calculate chassis power budget; avoid populating high-power modules to full capacity
  5. Swap with known good module in same slot to isolate backplane fault
  6. Entire group (16 agujas) sin salida, one group dead, other group normal

Síntomas

Channels 0~15 or 16~31 all inactive; forcing Data bit ON does not light channel indicators

Causas

  1. Circuito abierto, loose terminal or blown fuse for the group DC-COM
  2. Short circuit on one load in the group pulls down the group supply (OB32 no single-point protection)
  3. Damaged RTB base or loose crimps

Resolutions

  1. Apagar, test continuity between group COM and 24V negative, check fuses
  2. Disconnect all field wiring for this group then force outputs; if restored, fault is external wiring or load, isolate circuit by circuit
  3. Replace RTB terminal base for testing
  4. Single channel no output, rest channels work normally

Síntomas

Forced ON in program, tag shows ON but no voltage at output, load does not activate

Causas

  1. Open load, failed load, polaridad invertida (common NPN mistake: load negative to 24V+)
  2. Loose crimp, broken wire inside terminal
  3. Internal output transistor damaged (high risk without freewheeling diode for inductive loads)

Resolutions

  1. Disconnect field wire at terminal, force ON and measure voltage between point and COM:

24V present: Fault is external wiring or load

No voltage: Channel burned out, replace module

  1. Fit freewheeling diodes (1N4007) across solenoid and relay coils
  2. Output stuck ON (remains energized even when forced OFF)

Síntomas

Program set to 0 or forced OFF, voltage remains at output, load stays active (safety hazard)

Causas

  1. Output transistor shorted (Back EMF from inductive loads is the main cause)
  2. 24V+ accidentally fed back into output wiring
  3. Miswiring, output shorted to 24V positive

Resolutions

  1. Disconnect field wiring then force OFF:

Voltage disappears: External cross-feed or wiring short

Voltage still present: Internal MOSFET shorted, module scrapped

  1. Add freewheeling protection for inductive loads
  2. Residual voltage when OFF (5~12V), false triggering of loads

Síntomas

Point OFF, multimeter reads several volts; low-current LEDs or SSR glow faintly and trigger falsely; residual voltage rises with more ON points in same group

Causas

  1. Excessive internal leakage (module hardware fault)
  2. High-impedance loads (small LEDs, photo inputs) triggered by leakage current
  3. Capacitive coupling from long parallel cables in the same group

Resolutions

  1. Test with low-impedance load; isolate high-impedance loads via intermediate relay
  2. Fit bleed resistor (1k~2.2k / 0.5W.) from output point to COM
  3. If residual voltage remains after isolation: module faulty, reemplazar
  4. Output pulse at power-up, load momentary false activation

Síntomas

Solenoid or indicator flashes briefly when PLC/module powers on, then operates normally

Causas

Undefined output state during module initialization; incorrect Program Mode / Fault Mode setting

Resolutions

  1. Configure module in Studio5000: Program Mode = Off, Fault Mode = Off
  2. Add hardwired safety circuits / emergency stop for critical loads
  3. Fit RC snubber circuits for high-power inductive loads
  4. Intermittent operation, unstable output, random loss of control

Síntomas

Works occasionally, fails randomly; vibration and temperature changes trigger faults more easily

Causas

  1. Loose RTB terminals, poor crimps, fatigued spring contacts
  2. Oxidized backplane gold fingers, module not fully latched
  3. High ripple or insufficient 24V supply, voltage drops below 10V under load
  4. Internal component aging or dry joints inside module

Resolutions

  1. Re-crimp wires and verify spring-clamp seating
  2. Remove and re-seat module, inspect chassis backplane
  3. Monitor 24V DC supply; voltage must stay above 10V under load
  4. Swap module for verification
  5. Indicator Light Quick Reference

OK steady green: Module communication healthy

OK flashing red: Fallo de comunicación, electronic keying mismatch

Channel indicator: Lights when controller sends ON command; lit indicator does not guarantee valid output voltage; indicator may still light with failed internal transistor

Nota importante: Channel LEDs only reflect controller command; they do NOT detect external short circuits or open loads. This is a major difference from diagnostic modules such as OB16D / OV32E.

✅ Standard Isolation Troubleshooting Sequence

  1. Apagar, take photos of wiring
  2. Disconnect all field wiring from RTB to isolate external circuit
  3. Encendido, force outputs from Studio5000
  4. Measure voltage at module terminals:

✅ 24V when forced ON, near 0V when forced OFF: Fault is external wiring, load or supply

❌ Measured voltage does not follow force command: Module hardware faulty

⚠️ Errores comunes

  1. No individual fuses; single short circuit can take down the whole group, not suitable for loads prone to shorting
  2. NPN sinking polarity is critical; reversed wiring causes no output or burnt channels
  3. Solenoids and relays without freewheeling diodes have high long-term transistor failure risk
  4. Channel LEDs cannot validate external circuit health; always measure with a multimeter
