Wiring Diagram for TL-Q5MC1-Z (NPN NO)

Wiring rule: Brown = Positive, Blue = Negative, Black = Signal

Brown: DC+ 24V

Blue: DC0V

Black: NPN output (when iron approaches → black wire pulled to 0V, indicator ON)

This is non-shielded type. Side and rear surfaces cannot be close to metal to avoid false trigger.

1) Drive intermediate relay (independent load test)

Brown → 24V+

Blue → 24V-

Black → One terminal of relay coil

The other terminal of relay coil → 24V+

✅ Iron detected: Relay energized; No iron: Relay de-energized

2) Mitsubishi FX (sink input, most common)

Brown: 24V+

Blue: 0V

Black: X0 (X input terminal)

PLC COM terminal: Connect to 24V+

Sink input: X point detects 0V signal → input LED ON, matching NPN output

3) Siemens S7-200SMART / S7-1200 (DI sink wiring)

Brown: 24V+

Blue: 0V

Black: I0.0 (DI terminal)

Input common terminal 1M: Connect to 24V+

Note: Siemens DI supports sink/source switching. NPN sensor requires 1M connected to +24V. If 1M is connected to 0V, it is for PNP sensors, this model cannot work.

4) OMRON CP1E/CP1H

Brown: 24V+

Blue: 0V

Black: Input terminal (e.g. 0.00)

COM: Connect to 24V+

⚠️ Important: Sensor power supply and PLC power supply must share the same GND (0V connected together), otherwise signal jitter and unstable detection.

  1. Quick Multimeter Test Method (Test before power-on to avoid damage)
  2. Wiring: Brown to 24V+, Blue to 0V, black wire open-circuit
  3. No iron nearby: Voltage on black wire ≈ 24V, indicator OFF
  4. Iron block close to front face (≤4mm): Voltage on black wire ≈ 0V, indicator ON
  5. Iron removed: Back to 24V, indicator OFF

If the performance is inconsistent → sensor damaged or wiring error

III. Troubleshooting List for TL-Q5MC1-Z

PhenomenonCheck Items
Indicator keeps ON all the time, cannot reset① Non-shielded installation: surrounding metal too close; ② Iron powder/chips on sensing surface; ③ Black wire shorted to 24V; ④ Internal transistor breakdown
Indicator always OFF, no response even with iron① Brown & Blue reversed, voltage lower than 10V; ② Insufficient power capacity; ③ Broken wire; ④ Sensor burnt; ⑤ Target is non-ferrous metal (aluminum/copper barely detectable)
Indicator ON but PLC receives no input① Wrong PLC COM wiring (NPN cannot use COM to 0V); ② No common GND; ③ Faulty input channel; ④ Long cable & interference; ⑤ Exceed 500Hz response frequency for high-speed counting
Signal intermittent / jumping randomly① Metal interference around non-shielded sensor; ② Signal cable routed together with power cables for inverter/servo; ③ Large ripple of power supply; ④ Working distance over 4mm; ⑤ Mutual interference between adjacent proximity sensors
Burned shortly after power-on① Long-term reverse connection (reverse protection exists but not for continuous reverse voltage); ② Load short-circuit; ③ Supply voltage over 30V
  1. Installation & Wiring Specification (Non-shielded Priority)
  2. Sensing distance: Practical working distance ≤4mm, avoid using the 5mm limit
  3. Mounting clearance: Keep ≥15mm clearance between sensor side/rear and metal. Shielded type can be flush mounted.
  4. Multi-sensor side-by-side installation: Center distance ≥30mm between two TL-Q sensors to prevent mutual interference
  5. Cable: Standard 2m; If extended, shielded cable is recommended, shield grounded at single end; Do not run together with inverter / servo power cables
  6. Minimum iron target: Iron plate ≥17×17×1mm. Small workpiece causes unstable detection.
  7. Emergency Conversion Solution

If PLC only supports source input (COM connected to 0V) and only TL-Q5MC1-Z (NPN) available:

Use the NPN output to drive a DC24V miniature relay, then feed the relay dry contact to PLC input for signal isolation conversion.

Typical Application Cases of TL-Q5MC1-Z (NPN NO, Non-shielded, 5mm)

Core constraints: Only detect ferromagnetic metal; reserve clearance from surrounding metal for non-shielded type; response frequency 500Hz; NPN NO, signal ON when metal approaches

Case 1: Workpiece arrival detection on conveyor line (most widely used)

Scene: Belt conveyor, tooling pallet assembly line, confirm iron/stainless steel workpiece arrives at station

Solution: Sensor mounted at side of station, small iron sheet installed on pallet as target. When pallet arrives and iron sheet enters 0–4mm sensing zone, NPN signal sent to PLC input

Logic: Signal ON → stop conveyor, start clamping / machining / marking; Signal OFF → release

Notes:

Keep ≥15mm gap between conveyor frame metal and sensor side to avoid false trigger

Aluminum / copper workpiece cannot be directly detected, add iron target plate

Compatible PLC: Mitsubishi FX, Siemens S7-200SMART (sink input)

Case 2: Origin & hard limit for machine slide / manipulator

Scene: Small CNC equipment, servo slide, transfer manipulator origin homing and overtravel protection

Solution: Iron target plate fixed on slide side, sensor installed at origin position. When slide returns home, trigger signal, PLC reset position and confirm origin completion. A second sensor can be used as overtravel limit.

Advantage: Non-contact, no mechanical wear, better durability than mechanical limit switch under oil and iron chip environment

Risk reminder: Non-shielded type cannot attach to machine sheet metal, use bracket for floating installation. Iron chips accumulated on sensing surface will cause continuous false trigger, regular blow cleaning required.

Case 3: Gear / rotary table speed detection & pulse measurement

Scene: Indexing table, motor driven gear, rotary fixture, speed measurement, stall detection, synchronous control

Solution: Ferromagnetic gear teeth aligned to sensor, pulse output when teeth pass by. PLC high-speed counter collects pulses to calculate rotation speed and stall status.

Upper limit: Max. 500Hz, suitable for low-speed rotary table (low RPM), not for high-speed spindle

Commissioning: Gap between tooth top and sensor controlled at 2–3mm; tooth width cannot be too small to guarantee stable pulse.

Case 4: Counting screws, nuts and stamping small parts

Scene: Vibratory feeder discharge, stamping blanking, hardware assembly machine, count ferrous parts

Solution: Sensor mounted beside vibratory feeder track, trigger one pulse when screw passes sensing zone. PLC accumulates count, alarm or stop machine when reaching set value.

Pain point: Repeated triggering for fast passing small parts; add debounce delay / single pulse latch in PLC program

Limitation: Only ferrous parts; weak magnetic stainless steel has reduced sensing distance, reduce gap accordingly.

Case 5: Cylinder / clamping fixture status feedback

Scene: Pneumatic clamping mechanism, fixture cylinder, confirm jaw clamping completion

Solution: Iron target plate fixed at end of cylinder piston rod, sensor installed at cylinder tail. When cylinder extends to clamp, iron sheet approaches sensor and signal ON, PLC confirms clamping finished and allows next action.

Comparison: Better than cylinder magnetic switch — no risk of magnet demagnetization; Disadvantage: Extra metal target plate needed.

Case 6: Low-level material alarm for ferrous bulk material silo

Scene: Iron powder, iron chips, steel ball silo, low material level alarm (lower limit detection)

Solution: Sensor installed at lower side wall of silo. When material level higher than sensor, metal material covers sensing surface, signal ON; when material level drops below sensor, signal OFF, PLC triggers low material alarm for feeding reminder.

Limitation: Only for ferromagnetic bulk material; clean sensing surface regularly under heavy dust environment.

Case 7: Metal part presence confirmation & missing part check for packaging machine

Scene: Auto parts and hardware packaging machine, confirm iron gasket / iron clip is loaded

Solution: Sensor fixed at station. When packaging is in place and target detected, normal; no signal = missing part, trigger reject mechanism.

Notes: Packaging machine frame has lots of metal, isolate sensor with bracket, cable shielding required, keep away from inverter power cables.

Case 8: Automated warehouse & turnover pallet identification

Scene: Roller conveyor pallet positioning, iron sheet pre-installed on pallet bottom for station positioning and diverting

Solution: Sensor mounted above or side of roller frame. When pallet flows to target station, iron sheet triggers signal, PLC stops roller and starts scanning or transfer action.

Multi-sensor mounting: Center distance ≥30mm between two TL-Q sensors to avoid mutual interference.
