The CA5X-10 is a front-mount auxiliary contact extension block specially designed by ABB for AX series contactors. It is equipped with 1 normally open (NO) instantaneous contact. It is mainly used to expand nodes of the contactor control circuit, realizing functions such as operating status feedback, logic interlocking, signal transfer and remote start/stop.

This block features a clip-on quick-mount structure for tool-free installation on the front of contactors. It comes with standard screw terminals. Its electrical performance complies with IEC 60947-5-1 and it holds major global certifications including CCC, CE and CB. It is widely applied in industrial scenarios such as low-voltage power distribution, motor control and automation control cabinets.

CA5X-022NC1SBN019010R1002Dual NC contacts for redundant safety circuit design

> Important Note: CA5X series is only compatible with AX / NX series contactors. For legacy A/AL/AE series contactors, please use CA5 series auxiliary contacts (e.g. CA5-10). The two series feature incompatible mechanical structures and must not be used interchangeably.

Compatible Contactors

Main contactors: ABB AX series AC contactors (Full range: AX06 ~ AX150)

Relays: ABB NX series contact relays

Stacked installation: Up to 4 pieces of CA5X auxiliary contact blocks can be mounted on the front of one single contactor.

Installation & Wiring Instructions

  1. Installation Steps: Cut off power supply first. Align the auxiliary contact block with the guide grooves on the contactor front, then press down vertically until an audible click indicates full locking. Shake slightly to confirm firm installation. To remove, press the release latch on the top and pull upwards.
  2. Terminal Definition: Terminals marked “3” and “4” correspond to the two ends of the single NO contact. The contact closes when the contactor is energized and opens when de-energized.
  3. Wiring Specification: Suitable for solid/stranded wires of 0.5~1.5mm² and flexible wires of 0.5~1.0mm². Tighten screws at 0.6~0.8 N·m to avoid terminal damage or poor contact caused by excessive torque.
  4. Prohibited Operations: Never install or remove the block while powered on. It is designed exclusively for control circuit signals and shall not be connected to main power circuits for load switching. Do not operate continuously beyond rated load.

Troubleshooting Matrix

Fault PhenomenonRoot CauseStep-by-Step Solutions
Contact fails to close when contactor is energizedImproper installation, contact oxidation or loose wiring1. Reinstall the block after power off and ensure full locking of clips.
2. Retighten terminals and check wire continuity.
3. Operate the contactor repeatedly to polish contacts; replace the block if severely oxidized.
Poor contact & flickering signalsInsufficient screw torque, terminal oxidation or overload1. Retighten terminals to specified torque.
2. Clean contact surfaces to remove oxide layer.
3. Verify load current and ensure compliance with AC-15 / DC-13 ratings.
Contactor jams and cannot pull in after installationMisaligned block, incomplete clip engagement or foreign debris1. Remove and reinstall the block with proper alignment to guide grooves.
2. Clean dust and foreign objects between contactor and block.
3. Inspect for deformation; replace the block if structural damage is found.
Abnormal overheating at terminals during operationLoose connection, insufficient wire gauge or circuit overload1. Reconnect wires and ensure full insertion of conductors into terminals (power off).
2. Confirm wire cross-section matches load current.
3. Check circuit current; prolonged overload operation is forbidden.

Both CA5-10 and CA5X-10 are front-mount auxiliary contacts with 1 normally open contact. They share nearly identical electrical parameters but belong to two generations of contactor platforms with completely incompatible mechanical mounting structures, and must never be mixed. CA5-10 matches legacy A series contactors, while CA5X-10 is dedicated to the new AX series.

  1. Key Differences Analysis

2.1 Fundamental Difference: Non-interchangeable Mechanical Interface

The two models are similar in appearance and overall size, but differ in clip grooves and linkage structures, which are designed for dedicated contactor housings respectively:

Clips of CA5-10 fit exclusive grooves on A series contactors.

Clips of CA5X-10 match the new interface of AX series contactors.

Forced assembly will lead to loose clips, out-of-sync contacts and contactor jamming, and may even damage internal mechanisms. This is strictly prohibited in selection and application.

2.2 Product Generation & Supply Positioning

CA5-10: Mature legacy product, mainly used for maintenance and replacement of existing A series contactors. Not recommended for new projects.

CA5X-10: Current flagship product of ABB, supporting AX series contactors (successor of legacy A series). It features stable stock and comprehensive technical support.

2.3 Identical Electrical Performance & Compatible Circuit Design

They adopt the same technical platform for contact materials, arc extinguishing structures and electrical parameters. Load capacity and service life are equivalent under the same utilization category. Control circuit design and wiring rules can be fully followed between each other.

  1. Selection & Replacement Recommendations
  2. Maintenance of Existing Equipment: If the original contactors are A/AL/AE/AF series, select CA5-10 exclusively. CA5X-10 cannot be used as a replacement.
  3. New Project Design: Prioritize the combination of AX series contactors + CA5X series auxiliary contacts. This is ABB’s mainstream solution with reliable long-term supply and after-sales service.
  4. Contact Configuration Expansion: Both series provide multiple contact types such as CA5X-01/11/20/02 with consistent naming rules. Select models according to NO/NC requirements of control circuits.
