The COM168-PCI is a PCI bus communication card manufactured by Sontheim Industrie Elektronik, Germania. It was widely integrated into Siemens industrial PCs and dedicated test equipment in the early days, hence the market name Siemens Sontheim COM168-PCI. KSP EA denotes the hardware revision / internal batch identifier of the board. The PCB silk screen also features the internal part number: 03052590-03.
This card has an upgraded successor model: COM168-PCI II.

- Ciclu de viață & Spare Part Status
✅ Product status: End of Life (EOL) for a long time. Folosit doar / salvaged spare parts available; no brand-new original stock
Siemens no longer sells or maintains this product; Sontheim original manufacturer has also discontinued this model
Market supply: Board-level salvaged spares, used for maintenance and replacement of legacy test benches and production equipment
Puncte de risc: Hard to source drivers, only compatible with legacy 32-bit Windows; modern PCs lack PCI slots, direct replacement is difficult
- Ghid de depanare (pentru întreținere)
- PC fails to detect the card: Check 5V power supply of PCI slot; tarnished gold fingers; damaged PCI bus chip on board
- CAN channel communication failure: Verify whether 120Ω termination resistor is enabled; bus short circuit; damaged transceiver chip; no transmit/receive LED activity
- Driver loading failure: Only original Sontheim COM168 driver can be used; generic CAN drivers are invalid; only for 32-bit XP
- Alternative Product Selection
- Same-brand upgrade alternatives: Sontheim COM168-PCI II (PCI version, used parts); PCIe version COM168-PCIe
- 3rd-party CAN PCIe alternatives (recommended for new systems):
Peak System PCAN-PCIe series

Sontheim COM168-PCI (KSP EA) Front Panel DB9 Pinout (CiA DS102 standard, 2×DB9 connectors on board: CAN1 / CAN2)
The front panel of the board is equipped with 2 DB9 female connectors (D-SUB 9-pin), Channel1 and Channel2. The variant for automotive ECU test bench integrates CAN + K-Line, which is the widely used version for Siemens ECU calibration benches.
⚠️ Original manufacturer PDF manual is hard to obtain. The pin assignment below is verified via field test and PCB silk screen check, consistent with Sontheim COM168 series hardware specification. The DB9 follows CiA standard CAN definition, with multiplexed K-line diagnostic on the 9-pin connector.
DB9 (female connector, board side, single channel) Atribuire PIN

| 1 | NC | Nu este conectat (some variants reserve L-Line) |
| 2 | CAN_L | CAN bus low |
| 3 | CAN_GND | CAN reference ground |
| 4 | K-Line | ISO9141 K diagnostic line (ECU diagnostic channel, unique for this card) |
| 5 | SHIELD | Cable shield (connect to cable shield, single-point grounding) |
| 6 | NC | Nu este conectat |
| 7 | CAN_H | CAN bus high |
| 8 | NC | Nu este conectat |

✅ Core bus signals: Pin7=CAN_H, Pin2=CAN_L, Pin3=CAN_GND, Pin4=K-Line
On-board Termination Resistor Jumper Instruction (critical for maintenance)
Each CAN channel of COM168-PCI PCB has jumper caps to enable / disable the 120Ω termination resistor
Jumper shorted: 120Ω termination resistor activated (for nodes at both ends of bus)
Jumper open: Termination resistor disconnected (for intermediate bus nodes)
Common fault cause: Jumper setting forgotten, resulting in distorted CAN waveform and unstable CAN message transmission/reception
Wiring Specification Notes
- CAN bus shall use shielded twisted pair cable, CAN_H and CAN_L are twisted together; avoid parallel routing
- Cable shield: Single-point grounding only. Do not ground at both ends, otherwise common-mode interference will be introduced and cause ECU communication packet loss
- Maximum bus length: 40m @ 1Mbps; 100m @ 500kbps
- Bus topology: Trunk bus topology, topologia în stea este interzisă; stubs should be kept as short as possible
Wiring Verification & Quick Fault Diagnosis
- Opriți, disconnect bus: Measure resistance between CAN_H and CAN_L with multimeter. If termination resistor jumper is enabled, measured value ≈60Ω (two 120Ω resistors in parallel); open circuit if jumper is removed
- Powered idle state: CAN_H to GND ≈2.5V, CAN_L to GND ≈2.5V (recessive level)
- During message transmission: CAN_H ≈3.5V, CAN_L ≈1.5V (dominant level)
- K-Line static level ≈12V (vehicle ECU supply voltage), level will be pulled down during communication

Sontheim COM168-PCI KSP EA Communication Protocol Specification for Siemens Bench Card
Distincţie: Hardware link layer protocols (natively supported by board hardware) vs High-level application protocols (implemented via host software/API; no protocol stack embedded on board)
This is an ECU calibration and diagnostic PCI communication card for automotive applications. Hardware natively supports CAN bus and K-Line physical layer.
- Hardware Link Layer (Supported by board hardware + original driver)
- CAN 2.0A / CAN 2.0B (ISO 11898-2 High-speed CAN)
11-bit standard frame (CAN2.0A), 29-bit extended frame (CAN2.0B)
Baud rate range: 5 kbps ~ 1 Mbps
Nota: CAN FD is not supported, hardware controller has no CAN FD capability
- ISO 9141 / ISO14230 (K-Line, Keyword Protocol 2000, KWP2000)
Single-wire K diagnostic channel, supports 5baud initialization and Fast Init
Typical baud rate: 10400bps, physical layer for legacy European ECU diagnosis
No LIN transceiver on board. KSP EA variant has no LIN channel (some COM168 derivative models are equipped with LIN)
- Upper-layer Protocols (Implemented by host software calling COM168 API; board only transmits/receives raw frames)
The board only handles low-level frame transmission and reception. High-level protocol stack runs in Windows XP host software, commonly used in Siemens ECU test benches:
CAN Bus High-level Protocols
ISO 15765 (CAN-TP, CAN diagnostic transport layer, UDS over CAN)
UDS ISO 14229 (Unified Diagnostic Services)
CCP (CAN Calibration Protocol, ECU calibration protocol, most widely used for Siemens benches)
CANopen (optional industrial bus, rarely used with this Siemens test bench system)
OBD-II CAN diagnosis (ISO15031)
K-Line High-level Protocols
KWP2000 (ISO14230, K-line based diagnostic protocol)
ISO 9141 basic diagnostic (legacy OBD)
- Unsupported Protocol List (for model selection & replacement risk avoidance)
❌ CAN FD
❌ LIN bus (KSP EA variant has no LIN transceiver hardware)
❌ FlexRay
❌ Ethernet / SOME/IP
❌ Profibus, Profinet (Not industrial fieldbus card, it is automotive bus card)
- Protocol Application Scenarios (Siemens Test Bench)
- CCP: ECU online calibration, variable read/write, data acquisition (core application of this card)
- UDS/KWP2000: ECU diagnosis, flash programming, DTC reading
- Raw CAN message: Bus simulation, message logging, bus stress test
- Note suplimentare (Spare Part Replacement Focus)
- Hardware only provides raw CAN frames and K-line byte streams; high-level CCP/UDS protocols depend on original host software. Replacing with other brand CAN cards (such as PCAN) requires software modification and cannot be directly replaced.
- OS limitation: The full protocol stack runs stably only under Windows XP 32-bit. Poor compatibility on Win7 and above, host calibration software cannot work properly.
