Terminal Assignment
1, 2: Passive 4–20mA signal input from 4-wire transmitters in hazardous explosion-proof field
3, 4: Safe-side output, connected to PLC/DCS analog input modules
Power terminals: External DC 20~35V power supply from safe area
Typical Wiring for 4-Wire Transmitters
- The 4-wire transmitter in hazardous area is powered by an independent external isolated power source; signal positive and negative lines connect to barrier terminals 1(+) et 2(-).
- Safe-side terminals 3(+) et 4(-) directly link to DCS/PLC AI modules.
- HART communicator can be paralleled on terminals 1/2 (hazardous side) ou 3/4 (safe side) for bidirectional reading and writing of instrument HART parameters.
> Critical Restrictions: Cables connected to blue intrinsically safe terminals must be routed separately; parallel laying with power cables in the same trunking is prohibited. Safety barriers must only be installed in non-hazardous safe areas.
- Core Comparison: MTL5541A vs Standard MTL5541
| Modèle | Type d'entrée | Compatible Transmitters |
| MTL5541A | Passive input (A = Passive) | Externally powered 4-wire transmitters: Field instruments have independent power supply; barrier only collects current without supplying loop power. |
| MTL5541 | Active loop power supply | 2-wire 4–20mA transmitters; barrier provides isolated intrinsically safe power to field transmitters. |
- Derivative Models in the Same Series
- MTL5541AS: Sinking current output variant for safe side, compatible with special PLC modules, maximum load resistance 600Ω.
- MTL5544A: Dual-channel passive input isolator, two independent 4–20mA signal acquisition channels per unit.

Full Application Scenarios of Eaton MTL5541A Passive Intrinsically Safe Isolator Barrier
- Core Prerequisite for Instrument Compatibility (Model Selection Divider)
MTL5541A is a passive input 4–20mA isolator barrier; it does not supply power to field instruments and only collects current signals from 4-wire transmitters.
Only compatible with: Explosion-proof 4-wire transmitters with independent on-site power supply.
2-wire transmitters are NOT supported — select MTL5541 instead.
HART protocol supported, Ex ia IIC rating, suitable for Zone 0 / Zone 1 gas hazardous locations and SIL2 safety loops.
