STBNIP2212: Modbus-TCP

STBNIC2212: EtherNet/IP

STBNDN2212: AppareilNet

🧰 Key Troubleshooting Points

  1. CAN bus communication failure: Check DB9 wiring, résistances de terminaison (120Ω at both ends of the bus), ensure no duplicate node IDs set via DIP switches
  2. Module red LED on power-up: Backplane 5V overload inside the island, excessive I/O modules or backplane short circuit
  3. No analog value upload: CANopen object dictionary entry 6423h is not set to 1
  4. High-temperature alarm: Ambient temperature exceeds 60℃, backplane current derating and excessive I/O load

STB I/O Island Hardware Wiring Overview (STBNCO2212)

DIN rail mounting sequence [left to right]: STBNCO2212 (NIM) → optional PDM power distribution module → DI/DO/AI/AO I/O modules → XBE expansion modules (for multi-segment expansion) → STBXMP1100 end termination cover

  1. NIM (STBNCO2212) DC24V Power Terminals

Spring terminals below the NIM supply power to the NIM itself, which converts internally to 5.25V for the island backplane bus (logic power for all internal I/O modules).

Positive terminal: DC24V+

Negative terminal: DC24V 0V

✅ Requirements: SELV extra-low safety voltage power supply, operating range 19.2~30VDC; small fuse recommended; reverse polarity forbidden.

Backplane output: DC5.25V, maximum. 1.2A for logic power of all I/O modules on the island. Exceeding this rating triggers red overload fault.

CAN Bus Wiring Rules

  1. Câble: Shielded twisted pair complying with CiA DR303-1
  2. Fit one 120Ω terminating resistor at each physical end of the CAN bus; no terminating resistors at intermediate nodes
  3. Bouclier: Single-point earthing only. Do not earth both ends (to avoid ground loop interference)
  4. Baud rate is set via two rotary DIP switches on the NIM, changes only take effect after power cycle. Node ID is also set by DIP switches; no duplicate IDs allowed on the same bus.
  5. I/O Island Backplane Bus (Inter-module connection)

Communication and 5V logic bus between NIM and I/O modules are implemented via metal contacts on STBXBA2000 base plates. No extra wiring required. Modules lock onto the base to automatically connect the backplane.

Single primary segment: I/O modules mounted directly to the right of NIM. STBXMP1100 termination cover must be fitted at the far right end of the segment.

Multi-segment expansion: Fit STBXBE1000 EOS expansion module at the end of primary segment. Use dedicated expansion cable to connect to the next I/O segment. Max.. 6 expansion segments; jusqu'à 32 I/O modules total per island.

  1. Field I/O Load Power Supply (Capteurs / Électrovannes)

⚠️ Distinguish two separate power circuits:

① Backplane 5.25V: Only powers internal electronics of I/O modules (supplied by NIM). Cannot feed external sensors or solenoid valves.

② Field 24V load supply: Powers DI sensors and DO solenoids, introduced via PDM power distribution modules (STBPDT series) and distributed to downstream I/O modules.

  1. Entrée numérique DI (example: STBDDI3610)

Module terminals: 24V+, 0V, channel I0~I5 etc.

For NPN/PNP sensors, connect common terminal according to module datasheet to 24V or 0V

  1. Sortie numérique DO

Output common terminal QC connects to load power to drive solenoid valves and indicators

  1. Analog AI/AO (STBACI / STBAVO series)

4-20mA / 0~10V signals. Use shielded cable and route separately from power cables. Object 6423h must be activated for AI modules to enable PDO upload.

  1. Mise en service & Fault Notes for Wiring
  2. Power-up sequence: Complete all field I/O wiring → Verify CAN bus and terminating resistors → Apply DC24V power to NIM last
  3. Red LED on power-up: ① DC24V reverse / sous-tension; ② backplane 5V overload (too many I/O modules or backplane short); ③ CAN bus ID conflict
  4. Irregular flashing CAN communication LED: Check reversed CAN_H/CAN_L, résistances de terminaison, shield earthing, matching baud rate between master and NIM
  5. No analog data: Write SDO to set 6423h=1 to enable analog PDO transmission

Schneider Advantys STB I/O Island (STBNCO2212) Défauts courants & Remèdes

Faults grouped by category: NIM hardware faults, backplane faults, CANopen communication faults, I/O channel faults, software configuration faults. LED interpretation follows STBNCO2212 official manual.

  1. NIM Red ERR LED steady ON, fails to start

Symptôme: NIM ERR red LED stays on, RUN LED off; I/O island cannot be scanned

  1. NIM DC24V supply abnormality

Cause: DC24V below 19.2V, ondulation excessive, polarité inversée, loose supply terminals

Remède: Measure terminal voltage of NIM; replace stabilized DC24V supply; verify polarity and fit fuse

  1. Surcharge / short circuit of island backplane 5.25V (high-frequency fault)

Cause: NIM max backplane output 1.2A, total logic current of I/O modules exceeds rating; burnt or deformed metal contacts on base plates; analog modules draw higher current and trigger this fault more easily

Remède:

Éteindre, remove I/O modules one by one to isolate the faulty module by sectioning

Calculate total logic consumption of all modules. Add STBCPS2111 auxiliary backplane power supply if overloaded

Inspect STBXBA2000 base plates for burn marks and bent spring contacts

  1. Poor contact between module and base plate

Cause: DIN rail not clipped securely, module not fully latched, oxidized spring contacts on base

Remède: Remove and re-seat all modules, clean metal contacts, confirm firm DIN rail mounting

  1. NIM hardware damage

Cause: Surge or overvoltage destroying internal power circuit

Remède: Power NIM alone disconnected from I/O island. If ERR remains red, replace STBNCO2212

  1. CANopen Communication Fault (CAN ERR red LED flashing / steady ON, PLC reports slave missing)

Symptôme: NIM CAN ERR alarm; PLC cannot detect STB slave or slave drops intermittently

  1. Physical CAN wiring defect (le plus fréquent)

Cause: CAN_H / CAN_L inversé; loose DB9 terminals; missing 120Ω terminators at bus ends, or incorrectly fitted terminators on intermediate nodes; ground loop due to shield earthing at both ends

Remède: Verify DB9 pinout; install 120Ω only at two physical ends; single-point shield earth; CiA standard shielded twisted pair; separate routing away from high-power cables

  1. Duplicate Node ID / Baud Rate Mismatch

Cause: DIP switch node ID duplicated on CAN bus; NIM baud rate different from CAN master; DIP switch modifications only take effect after power cycle

Remède: Éteindre, reset DIP switches to ensure unique IDs; match baud rate (125k/250k/500k/1M) between master and NIM, reboot island

  1. Heartbeat / Guard Timeout (Heartbeat/Guard fail, ERR flashes twice)

Cause: Bus interference, long cable length; too short heartbeat timeout parameter configured in master

Remède: Shorten cable length, improve shielding; increase slave heartbeat timeout in PLC master; eliminate earthing interference

  1. CAN Controller Error Alarm (ERR flashes once)

Cause: Persistent bus disturbance, error counter overflow

Remède: Check grounding and coupling interference from power cables; inspect cable damage; reduce number of bus nodes

CAN RUN Green LED Reference:

Off = Initialization; Steady ON = Communication OK; Flashing = Pre-operational; Slow flash = Stopped state

  1. Failure to detect some I/O modules (Advantys tool reports missing / mismatched module type)

Symptôme: After power-up self-test, NIM only detects partial I/O modules; Advantys software reports missing hardware

  1. Missing STBXMP1100 termination cover at segment end

Cause: No termination cover fitted at right end of I/O segment, backplane signal corrupted, modules further downstream not detected

Remède: Install STBXMP1100 termination cover at end of single segment

  1. Faulty STBXBE1000 expansion module / damaged expansion cable

Cause: For multi-segment islands, failed EOS/BOS expansion module or loose/broken dedicated expansion cable

Remède: Re-seat expansion cable; test expansion module standalone; dedicated expansion cable cannot be substituted with ordinary wire

  1. Mismatch between physical hardware and configuration

Cause: Hardware module type differs from project configuration in Advantys software; new module fitted without re-downloading configuration

Remède: Perform online auto-scan of I/O island, download new hardware configuration to NIM, press NIM RST button to reboot island

  1. Damaged base plate

Cause: Broken backplane contact spring on base plate, all modules after this position cannot communicate

Remède: Replace STBXBA2000 base plate

  1. Digital DI/DO Channel Faults

DI No Input Signal

Cause: Missing 24V field load power from PDM (Distinguish from NIM logic power! NIM only supplies backplane 5V; sensor power comes from PDM); wrong common wiring; mismatch between NPN/PNP sensor and module type; broken sensor wire

Remède: Measure 24V output of PDM; verify DI common wiring; check sensor power and signal cable

DO No Output / Uncontrolled Output

Cause: No load power connected to DO common QC terminal; shorted load burns DO channel; DO enters fail-safe state on communication loss; hardware channel damage

Remède: Check 24V supply at DO QC terminal; inspect solenoid valve load for short; check PLC communication status; force output test to confirm hardware failure

  1. Analog AI/AO No Reading / Jumpy Values (STBACI/STBAVO)
  2. AI no acquisition data

Cause: CANopen object dictionary 6423h not set to 1, analog TxPDO disabled by default; unshielded analog cable with heavy interference; loss of sensor supply; open 4-20mA loop

Remède: Write SDO to set 6423h=1 to enable TxPDO; use shielded analog cable routed away from power cables; inspect sensor loop continuity

  1. Analog value drift or random fluctuation

Cause: Ground loop interference; analog cables run together with power cables; loose terminal screws

Remède: Single-point earth for analog shield; separate cable trays; serrer les bornes; inspect sensor

  1. Configuration du logiciel & Download Faults (Advantys Configuration Tool)
  2. Configuration download failure, cannot write to NIM

Cause: Unstable communication link; NIM locked to original master; incompatible old firmware/software version

Remède: Check CAN communication; clear master lock on NIM; update Advantys software; reset NIM before re-download

  1. Software warning: insufficient logic bus current

Cause: Total logic consumption of all island modules exceeds NIM 5.25V backplane rating

Remède: Add STBCPS2111 auxiliary backplane power or split hardware into two separate I/O islands

  1. Intermittent Random Faults (hardest to troubleshoot)

Typical symptoms: Random communication dropouts, sporadic point flicker; faults more likely to occur under machine vibration

  1. Vibration-induced loose terminals / base plate spring contacts
  2. Incorrect CAN shield earthing, pulse interference generated by large power equipment switching
  3. Undersized DC24V power supply, voltage dip during load fluctuation
  4. Température ambiante >60℃, NIM backplane current derating and insufficient I/O power (0.575A from 60~70℃)

Remède: Tighten all terminals; rectify shield earthing; upgrade DC24V power rating; improve cabinet cooling to reduce ambient temperature

  1. Recommended On-site Troubleshooting Sequence
  2. Observe NIM front-panel LEDs to narrow fault domain (NIM power / fond de panier / Bus CAN)
  3. Éteindre, visual inspection of modules, base plates and wiring for burn marks and looseness
  4. Measure DC24V supply at NIM terminals
  5. Disconnect CAN bus and power up I/O island standalone to isolate fault to either internal backplane or external field bus
  6. Remove I/O modules sequentially to locate faulty module or base plate
  7. Check CAN bus: résistances de terminaison, CAN_H/CAN_L, shield earthing, node ID and baud rate
  8. Use Advantys software online diagnosis to read internal NIM fault words
  9. Finally perform channel tests and force I/O points to validate hardware condition
  10. Safety Notes Before Shutdown

When CAN communication is lost, STB DO outputs enter pre-defined fail-safe state (hold / réinitialiser, defined in configuration). Safety interlocks must be considered for actuators.

Power down the entire I/O island before removing modules or modifying DIP switches. Hot-swap of STB modules on base plates is forbidden.
