Modicon TM5 24VDC I/O Power Distribution Module (PDM)
It belongs to Schneider TM5 distributed remote I/O series, compatible with M258 / LMC058 controllers. It supplies power to the TM5 backplane bus, and provides segmented 24V field power for I/O modules. It isolates different I/O power domains and expands backplane power capacity.
✅ Core Functions
- Power supply for TM5 internal power bus: Max. output 1136mA (≤55°C); 740mA (55~60°C)
- I/O field power segment: 24VDC, max. 10A, to supply field side of DI/DO/AI/AO I/O modules on the right side of this base
- Segmented power isolation: A full TM5 station can be divided into multiple independent 24V I/O power domains. Short-circuit on one segment will not shut down the entire bus.
- Diagnostic status bits for bus: Bus OK / power warning, I/O data valid, readable via PLC program.

⚠️ TM5SPS2 vs TM5SPS2F (Key Selection Guide)
TM5SPS2: External fuse required, max 10A for I/O segment
TM5SPS2F: Built-in 6.3A fuse, I/O segment limited to 6.3A, no external fuse needed
📌 Typical Applications
Packaging machinery, material handling, machine tool distributed remote I/O islands. Deploy TM5SPS2 for backplane power shortage or segmented protection for sensor/actuator power.
🛠️ Troubleshooting Guide
- Bus warning bit triggered: Check 24V voltage drop, blown fuse, overload or short circuit in I/O segment
- Module no communication: Verify TM5 bus connector, base address and module ID recognition
- No field power to I/O modules: Check external 24V input at PS2 terminals and external fuse status
Note: All 0V connections must be tied together and connected to Functional Earth (FE) to meet EMC requirements. Only PELV safety extra-low voltage power is permitted; mains AC voltage cannot be directly connected.
📎 Alternatives & Series Comparison
TM5SPS1: I/O power segmentation only, no TM5 backplane bus power supply
TM5SPS2F: Same function with built-in 6.3A fuse
TM5SBER2: TM5 remote I/O receiver module with integrated bus power supply
Schneider TM5SPS2 Wiring Instructions
TM5SPS2 must be used with TM5ACTB12PS (12-pin spring terminal block). The terminal block snaps under the TM5ACBMxx bus base, and the electronic module plugs onto the base. Terminal numbers are printed on the terminal block.

✅ Quick distinction between two power rails:
PS1 (Pin1/2) = TM5 backplane bus power; PS2 (Pin5/6) = I/O field load power. Two separate 24V supplies can be used for isolated power segmentation.
- Two Typical Wiring Schemes
Scheme 1: Single 24V Power Supply (Standard)
+24V from power supply is split into two branches: one through 1A T-fuse → Terminal 1; another through 10A T-fuse → Terminal 5
Power 0V: Tie Terminal 2 and Terminal 6 together, connect to power supply 0V. Link 0V to Functional Earth (FE) for EMC compliance.
Notes: Bus power and I/O power share the same source. Short circuit on I/O side will not directly damage the bus, but the power supply capacity must cover both backplane and I/O loads.
Scheme 2: Two Independent 24V Supplies (Isolated Segmentation, Recommended)
PS1 (Pin1/2): Independent 24V supply with 1A slow-blow fuse, dedicated for TM5 backplane bus
PS2 (Pin5/6): Separate 24V supply with 10A slow-blow fuse for sensors and actuators of right-side I/O modules
The 0V of the two power supplies must be interconnected and connected to FE functional earth
Advantage: Short circuit in I/O circuit will blow only the PS2 fuse, while TM5 backplane bus remains online. Suitable for high-reliability machines.
- Wire Specification (Spring Terminal)
Wire gauge range: 0.08 ~ 2.5 mm², recommended:
Main power cable: 0.75~1.5 mm²
Low-current signal: 0.5 mm²
Wire temperature rating ≥80°C, stripping length approx.8mm
- LED Indicator Definition (On Module Body)
E Fault LED:
Blinking: Low bus voltage / insufficient PS1 voltage / bus overload. Common field mistake: only PS2 (Pin5/6) wired while PS1 (Pin1/2) is missing → E LED blinks.
Steady ON: PS2 I/O power segment fault, overload or short circuit
RUN LED: Steady ON: Module healthy; OFF: No module power or bus fault
- Critical Safety & Wiring Prohibitions
- ❌ No built-in fuse! External Type T slow-blow fuse is mandatory for PS2 (max 10A). PS1 requires 1A slow-blow fuse. Module damage may occur without proper fusing in short-circuit events.
- ❌ No reverse polarity protection. Never swap +24V and 0V; reversed polarity will permanently damage TM5SPS2.
- ❌ Only PELV/SELV safety isolated 24VDC power supplies are allowed. Mains AC cannot be connected directly.
- ❌ Do not wire NC unused terminals (3,4,7~12) to prevent accidental short circuits.
- ✅ EMC mandatory requirement: All 0V tied together and connected to FE functional earth; FE shall not be confused with protective earth PE.
- ✅ Current derating: ≤55°C ambient for full backplane 1136mA; reduced to 740mA for 55~60°C.
- Pre-power-on Wiring Check List
- Confirm PS1 (Pin1,2) 24V is connected; do not only wire PS2 (Pin5,6)
- Verify Type T slow-blow fuses with correct ratings
- All 0V commoned and bonded to FE
- Terminals fully clamped, no loose connection or exposed copper strands causing short
- Measure before power-up with multimeter: 24VDC between pin1-2; 24VDC between pin5-6, correct polarity
- Configuration Notes (Machine Expert / SoMachine)
When the module is inserted into the base, software recognizes Module ID:7104. Status words available:
DcOk: Boolean flag for valid bus power
Bus power warning bit: Low voltage pre-alarm, usable for PLC alarm programming
