Operating Principle of Cylindrical Threaded Inductive Proximity Sensors

(Applies to M8/M12/M18/M30 types including IFM IE5099)

  1. 基本原則: High-frequency Alternating Magnetic Field + Eddy Current Effect

Inductive proximity sensors only detect conductive metals. Plastics, 木材, glass and liquids cannot be detected.

Three core internal circuits: High-frequency oscillator circuit, demodulator circuit, signal shaping & output circuit.

(1) Oscillation State (No metal nearby)

A coil-capacitor LC oscillator is built into the sensor head. 電源投入後, it continuously generates a high-frequency alternating magnetic field radiating outward.

Oscillation amplitude remains stable. The subsequent detection circuit judges: No metal → output initial state

For PNP NO sensors (例えば. IE5099): No high level at output.

(2) Eddy Current Attenuation State (Metal enters sensing zone)

When a metal target approaches the sensing face, the alternating magnetic field penetrates the metal surface. Closed eddy currents are induced inside the metal according to electromagnetic induction law.

Eddy currents generate a reverse magnetic field counteracting the original magnetic field from the sensor coil.

Energy is consumed by eddy currents → LC oscillator amplitude decreases, and may stop oscillating.

(3) Signal Conversion & 出力

The demodulator continuously monitors oscillation amplitude:

Sharp amplitude drop → Metal target detected;

Signals pass Schmitt trigger shaping and drive transistor circuits to switch output status (PNP/NPN turn on/off).
