⚠️ Common Failures & Spare Parts
- Backlight degradation: Most typical fault. Spare part 2711-NL1 (CCFL backlight tube; LED backlight modification is also feasible)
- Damaged touch panel: PV550 touch membrane can be replaced separately
- Program loss: On-board coin cell battery preserves screen programs; program loss occurs once battery fails
- Communication failure: DH485 bus termination resistor, wiring polarity, RSLinx driver issues
🔁 Replacement Options for Engineering Retrofit
Original project cannot be migrated directly, screen reconfiguration is mandatory
- Preferred direct replacement: 2711R-T4T / 2711R-T7T (PanelView 800). Supports RS485 and connects to legacy PLCs;
- Modern alternative: PanelView Plus 7 / PanelView 5000 series with Ethernet port;
- 3rd-party domestic HMI: Weintek / Kunlun MT, connecting legacy AB controllers via DH485/Modbus with lower cost.

2711-T5A2L1 (PanelView 550) Old-to-New HMI Program Migration Assessment Checklist
Applicable: Migration from legacy AB PanelView Standard 550 to PanelView 800 / PanelView Plus / 3rd-party domestic HMI
Key point: PanelBuilder32 project cannot be imported into new HMI software; full reconfiguration required. This checklist is used for pre-migration risk assessment and workload estimation.
- Hardware & Communication Assessment
| Assessment Item | Inspection Content | Risk Notes |
| Original Controller Model | SLC500 / MicroLogix 1000/1100/1200/1500? | Legacy PLC only supports DH485; verify whether new HMI has native DH485, otherwise protocol converter required |
| Communication Protocol | Original: DH485 | New HMI options: DH485 / DF1 / Modbus RTU (PLC side must support) |
| Address Mapping | Original PV550 tags: N, B, T, C, R, F and other PLC registers | ⚠️ Register addresses must be checked line by line, do not copy by experience; distinguish bits / words / floats |
| Communication Wiring | Existing DH485 bus, termination resistors, wiring polarity | New HMI communication interface differs, evaluate rewiring and additional converter workload |
| Power Supply | 24VDC | Most old & new units compatible; verify terminal definition and fuse rating |
| Panel Cutout Dimension | 2711-T5A2L1 cutout: 216 × 152mm | New HMI dimension differs; evaluate: direct replacement / adapter plate / cabinet cutout modification |
| Installation Environment | Temperature, dust, vibration | Verify new HMI environmental rating and IP protection match site conditions |
- Original HMI Project Inventory (Export from PanelBuilder32)
| Assessment Item | Inspection Content | Remarks |
| Total Screen Count | Main screen, manual mode, alarm, parameter, trend | Count screens to estimate configuration man-hours |
| Screen Element List | Buttons, indicators, numeric displays, input boxes, selector switches | Distinguish bit read/write, word read/write, multi-state indicators |
| Alarm Information | Alarm text, trigger bit, acknowledge bit, alarm log | ⚠️ PV550 uses simple bit-triggered alarms; new HMI alarm storage capacity varies |
| Recipe Function | Recipe used or not? | PV550 recipes stored locally in HMI; re-plan recipe storage location (HMI / PLC) for new HMI |
| Trend Curves | Real-time / historical trend, sampling cycle | Legacy PV550 only supports simple real-time trend without large-capacity history logging; evaluate history storage for new HMI |
| Security Access | Password, user level, screen access permission | Old & new permission models differ; recreate user accounts |
| Macro / Script Logic | PanelBuilder32 built-in macros | High risk: Macros cannot be migrated. All logic must be rewritten using new software scripts / functions |
| Screen Switch Logic | Screen jump buttons, conditional jump | Replicate conditional jump logic line by line |
| Print Function | This 2711-T5A2L1 model has no print port, skip this item | Evaluate printing if other models in the series are used |
| Hardcopy / Screenshot | Screen capture function required? | Configure on demand for new HMI |
III. Tag / Variable Mapping Assessment (Core Workload Item)
- Export full variable list of original project (print variable table in PB32)
- Classification & statistics:
Boolean (Bit: Run, Fault, Auto/Manual, Alarms)
Integer (Word: Setpoints, Counters)
Float (Temperature, Pressure)
- Verify PLC data file types: N files, B files, T/C preset values, registers
- Mark special variables:
Arrays
Indirect addressing (High risk: many new HMIs do not support legacy AB indirect addressing syntax)
Read-only / Read-write attributes
Risk note: DH485 address notation differs between HMI software packages, prone to address offset errors.
- Function Equivalence Assessment (Item-by-item comparison, mark missing functions)
| Original PV550 Function | Remarks |
| Bit buttons, momentary / latching buttons | Distinguish momentary pushbuttons (most common error source) |
| Multi-state indicators (3-state / multi-state) | |
| Numeric input, limit validation | PV550 local limit check; new HMI can validate on HMI side or PLC side |
| Screen jump, conditional jump | Test conditional jump logic |
| Alarm trigger, alarm acknowledge | Alarm text encoding (Chinese / English; legacy units mostly English) |
| Recipe read/write | Verify recipe quantity and data length |
| Real-time trend | Sampling cycle, channel quantity |
| User password permission | Password hierarchy, lock function |
| Macro logic | Decompose macro logic and implement via PLC logic or new HMI scripts |
- PLC Side Change Assessment
Whether PLC program modification is required to adapt new HMI communication
Whether spare PLC register space is available for new HMI functions (recipes, history logging)
Whether PLC firmware supports new protocols (e.g. DF1)
Downtime window assessment for PLC program download
- Test Plan Assessment
- Offline simulation: Simulate screens and variables in HMI software, verify addresses
- Bench test: New HMI + identical site PLC bench commissioning (recommended to reduce on-site downtime)
- Step-by-step on-site power-up test:
Communication connectivity test
All screen switching
Full button operation & indicator feedback
Parameter write / read verification
Alarm trigger & acknowledge test
Recipe read/write test
- Long-term aging test (optional)
- Rollback plan: Keep old HMI, mark wiring for fast fallback in case of failure
VII. Documentation & Delivery Assessment
Backup of new HMI project source file
Variable cross-reference table (old tags ↔ new HMI variables)
Screen function specification document
Updated wiring diagram (HMI terminals, communication bus)
Updated site operation manual
Spare parts list (new HMI spare parts, communication modules)
VIII. Risk Summary & Man-hour Estimation
Fill directly into assessment form
- High-risk items: Macro logic, indirect addressing, address misalignment
- Medium-risk items: Alarm logic, recipes, communication parameter mismatch
- Low-risk items: Screen layout, static text
Man-hour reference:
10 basic screens without complex macros/recipes: estimated 1~2 working days for configuration + testing; projects with heavy macros, recipes, indirect addressing require double the man-hours.
- Downtime Plan Assessment
Planned downtime window duration
Wiring modification time
Commissioning time
Emergency plan & rollback scheme

Key Project Migration Tips (Continued from your 2711-T5A2L1 migration assessment)
- 2711 (PV Standard) → 2711R PanelView800: Recommended, supports RS485/DF1 for SLC500/MicroLogix, moderate cost; screens must be reconfigured, PB32 project cannot be imported
- 2711 → PanelView Plus7: Also feasible, requires DF1 / serial communication module
- 2711 → PanelView5000: Not recommended for legacy DH485 retrofit. Software fully different, extra gateway required for serial port, heavy engineering workload
